Interpretation
The entered balance is above your selected local target. This is an interpretive planning measure, not a universal reserve requirement. Average coverage does not show cash flow timing or authorize spending reserves. Classifications, restrictions, reserve policy, volatility, legal requirements, and local risks affect interpretation. Displayed ratios are rounded; calculations use unrounded values.
Methodology
Choose unassigned, unrestricted, or another locally selected available fund balance. These measures are not interchangeable: unrestricted fund balance may include committed and assigned amounts that are unavailable for the purpose being analyzed. Use a consistent fund, fiscal year, and accounting basis, and exclude unusual one-time revenues or expenditures from the recurring comparison basis.
Formulas
- Average monthly basis = annual recurring expenditures or revenues ÷ 12.
- Months of coverage = available fund balance ÷ average monthly basis.
- Fund balance percentage = available fund balance ÷ annual basis × 100.
- Percentage target amount = annual basis × target percentage ÷ 100.
- Months target amount = average monthly basis × target months.
- Headroom or shortfall = available fund balance − target amount.
Worked example
The sample uses USD 6,000,000 in available fund balance and USD 14,400,000 in annual recurring operating expenditures. Average monthly spending is USD 1,200,000, giving 5.0 months of coverage and approximately 41.7%. A sample target of 16.7% equals USD 2,404,800 (2.004 months), leaving USD 3,595,200 of headroom. The 16.7% target is illustrative; select the target specified by your local policy.
Revenue mode uses annual recurring revenues as the denominator. Its months result is a revenue equivalent, rather than expenditure runway. Inputs update results immediately; Calculate also checks inputs and focuses the first error. The sample also supplies 14,400,000 in annual recurring revenues for exploring the alternative basis and a 2.004-month target equivalent to 16.7%. Reset and Load sample restore all amounts and display options. Currency selection changes formatting only and applies no exchange rate.
Ratios display one decimal place and money displays two. Calculations retain unrounded values. Amounts within half a currency unit cent of the target are treated as at target, with a small tolerance for floating point precision at very large scales. Supported monetary inputs are nonnegative and no greater than 1 quadrillion; the comparison basis must be positive. Targets range from 0 to 1200 in the selected units.

Limitations
This result is an interpretive planning measure, not a universal reserve requirement or a legal, accounting, investment, or credit-rating determination. Above target does not mean reserves are universally adequate; below target does not establish a legal deficiency.
Fund classifications, restrictions, encumbrances, reserve policy, revenue volatility, legal requirements, and local risks affect interpretation. Annual averages do not model seasonal cash flow, emergency needs, debt obligations, or future operating deficits. Fund balance is not necessarily cash available to spend. Consult your adopted policy and responsible finance officials when interpreting a scenario.
